EBK Registered Structural Engineers in Kenya

Structural design at TopHall is led by Amos Dindi, our Founder and Managing Director, registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya under B17850 — a number you can put to the Board before you appoint anyone.

Two things people conflate

Whether the design is right, and whether it is properly endorsed

The Engineers Board of Kenya regulates the practice of engineering and registers engineers, and certain engineering work and submissions must be carried out and endorsed by a registered professional. Registration attaches to individuals, not to companies — which is why the only useful question is who specifically will sign your drawings, and what their number is.

Ours is Amos Dindi, B17850. He founded the practice, he runs it, and his registration is checkable with the Board in the time it takes to read this paragraph. We would encourage you to do that here and with every firm on your shortlist.

Endorsement and adequacy are still different things, and it is worth being clear-eyed about that. A signature confirms a registered professional takes responsibility. It does not tell you whether the foundations were sized against a ground investigation or against an assumption. A properly endorsed design that was never checked against the ground is the more serious of the two problems, which is why the rest of this page is about the engineering rather than the credential.

What goes wrong with structural submissions

Five problems worth separating

Two are about credentials. Three are about engineering. You need all five covered.

  • Nobody established who would sign

The endorsement requirement attaches to an individual and to specific submissions. Confirm both at appointment, not at lodgement. On our projects that person is named in writing from the start.

  • A certificate taken at face value

Registration status is verifiable with the Board, and certificates circulate. Take the number rather than the image — ours is B17850 — and confirm it at source.

  • Foundations sized without ground investigation

Bearing capacity is the largest structural cost variable and it is a measurement. An endorsed drawing built on an assumption is still built on an assumption.

  • Detailing that cannot be built

Reinforcement congestion that works on paper and not in a mould gets resolved on site by whoever is pouring.

  • Design frozen before it was coordinated

Structural drawings that never met the architectural and services drawings produce clashes discovered during construction.

What we provide

Structural engineering, as its own appointment

Available independently of any design or construction contract.

  • Structural Design & Drawings

Reinforced concrete and steel design to Kenyan building codes, issued with details and bar bending schedules.

  • Structural Assessment

Investigation of existing buildings — added storeys, cracking, proposed alterations, load capacity.

  • Independent Site Inspection

Setting out, reinforcement, cover and concrete grade checked before pours, whoever is building.

  • Design Review

Third-party checking of structural drawings prepared elsewhere, against loading and ground conditions.

  • Civil & Water Engineering

Drainage, reticulation, retaining structures and site infrastructure, by the same practice.

How an appointment runs

Six steps, credentials first

Settle the endorsement question before the design work, every time.

  1. Identify the submissions

Which approvals your project requires and which of them need an engineering endorsement.

  2. Confirm the requirement is covered

That a suitably registered professional is on the team for each submission, established before design begins.

  3. Ground investigation

Bearing capacity and soil behaviour established rather than assumed from neighbouring plots.

  4. Analysis & design

Loading, member sizing and foundation design, coordinated with the architecture and services.

  5. Drawings issued

Construction drawings, sections, details and bar bending schedules a site team can build from.

  6. Support on site

Queries answered as they arise, with inspection at the stages that cannot be checked afterwards.

Why TopHall

What we can tell you, plainly

Including what to verify independently.

  • The registration is published, not promised

Amos Dindi, Founder and Managing Director — Engineers Board of Kenya, B17850. It is on our team page alongside his NEMA and Environmental Institute registrations, and you can verify all of them independently.

  • Civil engineers as the core discipline

TopHall's team are civil engineers specialising in structural, environmental and water resource engineering. It is what the practice is, not an added service.

  • Ground investigated, not inferred

Foundation type is the biggest structural cost variable, so bearing capacity is something we establish rather than judge.

  • Drawings from a practice that supervises pours

We also run construction, which is why the details answer site questions rather than generating them.

  • Independent review available

Checking another engineer's design, or inspecting another contractor's work, is a standalone appointment here.

Before you call

What clients ask about engineering registration

Does my structural design need to be endorsed by a registered engineer?

For submissions requiring professional engineering endorsement, yes — the Engineers Board of Kenya regulates engineering practice and registers engineers, and the requirement attaches to the individual who signs. Which of your specific submissions carry that requirement depends on the project and the approving authority, and it is worth establishing in writing at the start rather than discovering it when drawings are returned.

Is TopHall Group's structural work led by a registered engineer?

Yes. Amos Dindi, our Founder and Managing Director, is registered with the Engineers Board of Kenya under registration number B17850, and he is also a NEMA registered EIA consultant (13432) and a member of both the Institution of Engineers of Kenya and the Environmental Institute of Kenya (EIK/2/7521). Take the number to the Board and confirm it yourself — we publish it precisely so you do not have to take our word for anything.

Can you review structural drawings another engineer prepared?

Yes, and it is a common and inexpensive appointment. We check the design against the loading, the ground conditions and the buildability of the detailing, and tell you plainly whether it is sound, over-designed or under-designed. A review costs a fraction of a redesign and very much less than discovering a problem after the frame is up.

Need structural drawings that will be accepted?

Send us what you have. We will tell you what the submission requires, and whether the design itself needs work.
